Senior fraud seminar
fiscal cu hosts workshop featurig state senator jack scott
Fiscal Credit Union recently sponsored an investment fraud workshop, held at the Central Library in Glendale.
The two-hour seminar was geared toward educating older Californians, 50 and above, in learning how to spot and ultimately avoid falling victim to investment and telemarketing fraud. With more than $3.8 billion lost by Californians over age 50 to investment fraud alone, the seminar was an opportunity for people to become educated on the dangers of fraudulent telemarketers.
Fiscal Credit Union CEO Mike Gomez, along with state Senator Jack Scott and Glendale Mayor Frank Quintero, were among the opening presenters who stressed the importance of being protected against those who prey on society's most vulnerable members.
Also present were Lauren Velazquez and Maria Arechaederra of WISE Senior Services, a private multi-service, non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives and promoting the well being of California's senior citizens.
Topics discussed included current investment fraud and annuity scams presented by Kathy Holguin and Robyn Goodman of Seniors Against Investment Fraud (SAIF). The SAIF Program is a statewide outreach campaign under the California Department of Corporations, funded by the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice Planning. Its primary purpose is to take the leadership role to alert and educate all Californians over the age of 50 about investment and telemarketing fraud crimes and how to avoid being victimized.
U.S. Postal Inspector Julie Larson gave a compelling presentation on identity theft that included several invaluable prevention tips. Following the presentations, a question-and-answer session was held giving attendees a chance to interact with the presenters and share their own experiences.
